The turbine has now been commissioned for four months, and so far availability and output are showing good promise. Data from these first four months as follows:

This data indicates that the turbine has got off to a good start, the “teething” period was very short with very little availability dropped even in August, the commissioning month (the turbine commissioned on 2nd August). This even includes the period immediately following the official commissioning date during which EWT carried out various commissioning tests.

In other news, we won the award for best Sustainable Social Enterprise at the Cynnal Cymru awards on 30th November. Rob attended the event in the Senedd in Cardiff and collected our award for us.

Jeremy Thorp, accompanied by Wyn Roberts, our marketing agent, plus camera crew, visited the primary school in Meidrim on November 21st. The 11 children in the upper class were given a brief lesson about the turbine and then taken up to the site. In the afternoon Jeremy and Wyn helped the children to build a couple of model turbines using a construction kit. The responses from the children (and the teachers) was very positive.

We have had five applications to our request for interest in the initial £15,000 community fund that we are ready to distribute in the local community. The board have engaged with the community council in Meidrim and agreed to determine how to distribute this fund via a joint committee including Meidrim council members and YnNi Teg board members. We are hoping to determine this very soon so that we can distribute these funds in the community very shortly.

We have just included an extra option for people wishing to buy shares – we have just made it possible for someone to purchase shares as a gift for someone else – the ideal ethical gift. There is a separate link on the website for this, and the recipient gets an attractive gift token that they can use to register their membership and shares. We will be promoting this option in our various marketing channels on the run up to Christmas.

If you’ve already invested in YnNi Teg, we’re extremely grateful – but could you help us out even further by helping to promote the work we’re doing?

We need to raise £1.8m to cover the costs of our beautiful turbine, which means we need to reach a lot of potential investors. If you’re on Twitter or Facebook you can of course share our posts with your own followers, and that’s an excellent way to help spread the word so we very much encourage it!

But we’d also like to create some content that we can post on our own social media accounts, and that’s where you can really help!

You could, for example, send us a photograph of yourself with a couple of sentences explaining why you invested.

Even better, you could film a short (say 20-30 seconds) video of yourself talking about your decision to invest.

You don’t need to be an expert cinematographer to make a video, nor do you need any specialist equipment; a quick video on your smartphone is all it takes, and you can send it to us by email.

If you don’t have a smartphone, or aren’t confident filming yourself, we could even arrange to film you. We’re trying to make it as easy, and un-scary, as possible for our investors to help; as you’ll appreciate, it’s really important that we tell the world about YnNi Teg, so we’re happy to make it as easy as possible for our investors and members to get involved.

Pupils at Ysgol Meidrim have been treated to a lesson in energy and its production from Jeremy Thorp, Director of YnNi Teg. YnNi Teg Cyf is a Community Benefit Society who operate a wind turbine near the school, in Carmarthen.

Jeremy Thorp says:

“We had a great day with the fantastic pupils at Ysgol Meidrim. We discussed electricity, fossil fuels, and clean energy. We visited the turbine and did a quiz but hurried back to the school, to build mini turbines in the classroom, due to the wind and rain. The young people did see the turbine working at maximum.”

The electricity generation from the turbine is anticipated to be around 2100 MWh per year, enough energy to power 650 homes. The turbine, a 900kW EWT machine is estimated to be preventing 827 tonnes of CO₂ from entering the atmosphere a year.

Steffan Jones, Headteacher at Ysgol Meidrim says:

“I would like to thank Jeremy and the YnNi Teg team for coming to give the kids an amazing day full of interesting experiences. I have seen the benefit to the local community of green energy; a 500kW turbine at Bwlchgwynt which started energy generation in May 2016 has created a Community Fund and is now supporting projects in the village.”

YnNi Teg is creating a local fund for the benefit of the local community close to the turbine.

Anyone aged 16 or over can apply for between £100 and £100,000 in shares. Shareholders automatically become members of YnNi Teg, a registered society. A Registered Society has a set of rules, which have been approved and registered with the Financial Conduct Authority.

As the YnNi Teg wind turbine community share offer goes ‘live’ two Directors have completed a 90 mile charity bike ride. The wind turbine is located in the beautiful Carmarthenshire countryside. The bike ride took place from the wind turbine in Meidrim, Carmarthenshire to Cardiff.

Rob Proctor, Director of YnNi Teg Cyf (Welsh for Fair Energy Ltd) a Community Benefit Society says:
“Our recent bike ride has raised over £600 for the climate change charity, Size of Wales. Now our greater task is to raise £1.8M in shares. We are offering opportunities for people to become part-owners of the project. YnNi Teg are projecting a return of about 5%, which is very impressive.”

The team at YnNi Teg are committed to developing a clean energy future and mitigating climate change. The turbine is a 900kW EWT machine, located 8 miles (13 km) west of Carmarthen, and is estimated to be preventing 827 tonnes of CO₂ from entering the atmosphere a year. The electricity generation is anticipated to be around 2100 MWh per year, enough to power 650 homes.  The scheme would not have happened without YnNi Teg’s intervention, as changes to the Feed In Tariffs (FITs) would have made the project unviable.   However, the turbine is now up and running and the FITs secured.

All profit above the projected 5% return to shareholders, will be used to support the development of community energy throughout Wales and create a local fund for the benefit of the local community close to the turbine.”

On Friday 13^th October 2017, the Directors of YnNi Teg are joining a national day of action by going green in support of climate change charity, Size of Wales, whilst also launching their community share offer for their wind turbine project in Carmarthenshire. From wearing green socks to green wigs and face paints, the Directors are joining hundreds of people across Wales in taking green action to raise funds to help protect an area of tropical forest twice the size of our nation!

Rob Proctor, Director of YnNi Teg explained: “On Go Green Day, we will be taking part in a sponsored bike ride from our wind turbine in Meidrim, Carmarthenshire, all the way to Cardiff – a total of about 90 miles!  We will be dressed in green so it’ll be easy to spot us en route!  When we arrive in Cardiff, we will be officially launching our community share offer as part of the Size of Wales’ celebration event at the Tramshed to mark the end of Go Green Day.”

Rita Singh, Director of Size of Wales said: “Lots of businesses are planning to ‘Go Green’ by holding office bake sales or cycling to work competitions all up and down the country, and we’re delighted to be working alongside YnNi Teg to help them launch their share offer. Best of all, all the money raised in Wales will be doubled by our match fund!”

The money raised for Size of Wales will be spent on a range of activities that will help protect tropical forests – from buying tree seedlings, to funding and training biomonitoring teams and supporting local communities to develop sustainable livelihoods, to lobbying for land ownership rights for indigenous communities.

The world’s tropical forests absorb almost a fifth of the world’s man-made carbon dioxide emissions and one of Size of Wales’ main aims is to raise awareness of the importance of forest protection, as part of our national response to climate change.

Having recently reached a landmark target – protecting an area of tropical forest twice the size of Wales – the hope is that this year’s Go Green Day will be the biggest yet and have a significant impact towards helping to sustain these tropical forests for the future.  Find out more about Size of Wales’ forest projects here: sizeofwales.org.uk/projects
