Meet the team: Karen

Meet Karen, Communications and Engagement Manager

What’s your role at Ynni Teg?

As a Communications and Engagement Manager, I engage with local communities in Newport and Cardiff in South Wales, exploring the development of a community-owned Virtual Power Plant. This is focused on neighbourhoods around mosques that have solar and battery storage installed in these cities. The project aims to reduce fuel poverty and address the climate emergency by enabling local residents and businesses to generate and share energy in their communities.

Tell us a bit about you

I moved to Newport (South Wales) in 2017 and previously lived and worked across the South and East of England. I studied Biology (BSc) at University of East Anglia, Voluntary Sector Management at South Bank University (PGCert) and Sustainable Development in Practice at University of West of England (MSc).  Since 1998, I’ve worked mainly in the voluntary sector on waste prevention, community participation and energy.

And when you aren’t at work?

You’ll normally find me getting my hands dirty on my allotment, appreciating the worms and pollinators. I enjoy walking, cycling, yoga and meditation.
