Geraint Gwyllt Wind Turbine

Carmarthenshire
Status: operational

Ynni Teg owns and operates a 900kW wind turbine at Bwlchgwynt (‘Windy gap’) near Meidrim, Carmarthenshire. The project was part-funded through a share offer which attracted over 200 people to become members and raised just over £490k investment. We also received a substantial commercial loan now administered by the Development Bank for Wales.

The wind turbine was commissioned in August 2017 and generates between 1800 – 2000 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity annually—enough to power about 500 homes.  It is planned to operate until 2042.

It was named ‘Geraint Gwyllt’ (Wild Geraint) by local competition winner 6 year-old Mali, who chose to name it after the Welsh cycling champion Geraint Thomas.

In addition to preventing an estimated 827 tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere each year, surplus income from the turbine power sales goes into a local community benefit fund to support projects benefiting the local community and provides support for the activities of Community Energy Wales.
